What is Grief Bacon?

a very nutritious breakfast

Germans have a word for practically every intangible emotion. Schadenfreude is a great example of a German word to describe that ineffable feeling of joy in someone else’s failure. “Grief bacon” is inspired by another such German word: Kummerspreck. Basically it is meant to describe the weight gain you have from emotional eating. Literally, grief bacon.

Green Bay was recently named one of the fattest municipalities in the nation. We’re number 9 (dodged a bullet there, thanks Arkansas!). Emotional eating could be either from sadness/grief but it can also be from the kinds of emotional eating that happen when we’re together and celebrating. Also, Green Bay sounds a lot like Grief Bacon, so it seemed an appropriate name for a website that discusses Green Bay food stuff.

Kummerspreck! Enjoy.
